In Thessaloniki, a few minutes ago, ended the press conference with FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the Vice-President Georgios Makropoulos and Russian businessman Ivan Savvidi, the sponsor of the fourth stage of the Grand Prix series.

"It is very important for us that the entire civilized world turns its eyes towards Greece during these twelve days - said Savvidi. - If a nation is drawn to intelligence, it has a perspective. I would like to see Greece gravitating towards the intellect. I am often asked why I help chess. First of all, I support the strengthening of human intelligence. I am convinced that a highly intelligent man is less dangerous to society, and chess reinforces intelligence".

Journalists were mostly interested in Savvidi's business apart from chess, since he is the owner of the Greek football club PAOK. However, Savvidi kept referring to chess in all of his replies. For instance, he quoted the famous football commentator Kote Makharadze (Savvidi himself was born in Georgia), "Who said that football players do not play chess? Look at that knight's move made by David Kipiani!" He also expressed the wish of "some Greek chess player to contest the title of world chess champion in a PAOK's t-shirt" someday soon.
