Ushenina trying to defend title, Hou Yifan to get it back

The opening ceremony of the Women's Chess Championship Match 2013 took place in Taizhou, China. Anna Ushenina of Ukraine and Hou Yifan of China will compete for the title. The drawing brought Anna white pieces in the first game. The colors will be reversed after the 4th game.

The match consists of ten classical games. The winner of the ten-game match is the first player to reach 5.5 points or more. If the scores are level, a four-game tiebreak (25+10) will be played on a different day. If the scores stay level, two-game blitz match (5+3) will be played. The maximum number of blitz games in case of level score is five. Finally, Armageddon with the drawing lots will take place - the winner will be able to choose the color. The player with wite pieces will have five minutes against four minutes and draw odds for black with an increment of three seconds per move from move 61.

Let us remind you, Anna has won the knock-out championship in 2012 in Khanty-Mansiysk. Chinese already had the challenger's status by that time.

Objectively it wasn't easy to find any.

  • Alexander Khalifman is a coach of World champion Anna Ushenina. This information was announced by Mr. Faik Gasanov, Azerbaijan chess federation vice president.

  • On the first playing day the participants of the World Blitz Championship, which is held in Khanty-Mansiysk, played 8 rounds (16 games). Ian Nepomniachtchi and Le Quang Liem grabbed lead scoring 12 points each. Ruslan Ponomariov is half a point behind the leaders.
