Yerevan hosts 15th championship

The opening ceremony of the 15th European Individual Chess Championship was held at the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Yerevan. The championship is dedicated to the memory of Armenian world champion Tigran Petrosian. 

Three presidents visited the event: Serzh Sargsyan (president of Armenia), Kirsan Ilyumzhinov (president of FIDE) and Silvio Danailov (president of ECU). They were sitting side by side at the VIP box.

The championship gathered 258 players from 27 countries, Azerbaijan is unfortunately not participating. Along with the European champion's title, the competition gives 23 participants the chance to qualify to the World Cup 2015. The same number of places will be available in the championship next year.  

The prize fund is EUR 150 000; the first prize EUR 20 000.

This is an 11-round Swiss format competition. The drawing for Round 1 is already done. The round starts at 12:00 CET.
