Another Russian GM to Play at Stavanger: Grischuk Goes to Norway

The organisers of the supertournament Norway Chess announced another participant - Russian GM Alexander Greischuk. Thus, much like in Candidates', 4 out of 8 participants are Russian: 

Magnus CARLSEN
Levon ARONIAN
Vladimir KRAMNIK
Veselin TOPALOV
Fabiano CARUANA
Peter SVIDLER
Sergey KARJAKIN
Alexander GRISCHUK.

There's still one "elite" place left and it will be gained by the winner of Nordic qualification. Earlier Hikaru Nakamura denied the invitation to play at Norway Chess. 

The competition is scheduled to take place from June 2-13.

  • Norwegian journalist Tarjei J. Svensen tweeted names of six GMs who confirmed their participation in the supertournament Norway Chess. Those are:

  • Peter got a chance 

  • Veselin Topalov's French coach has been denied Russian visa, Silvio Danailov told Chess-News. According to him, the coach was waiting for the invitation from the organisers of the Candidates' tournament in Khanty-Mansiysk for a month; once he got it the Russian embassy on Paris didn't accept the invitation.

  • The highest and lowest ranked Norwegians

  • Eventually it turns out that GM Vassily Ivanchuk accepted the invitation and will play in the ACP Cup which is scheduled to take place from September 12th to 15th in Riga, Latvia. This was announced by Emil Sutovsky on his Facebook page. Earlier Sutovsky and Shirov said Ivanchuk declined the invitation.  

  • The 8th Tal Memorial will take place from June 12th-24th in Moscow. The Russia Chess Federation published the participants' list:

  • Only a month is left before the Candidates starts in Khanty-Mansiysk, the opening ceremony of which is scheduled on March 12. According to regulations FIDE should held the drawing of lots in the central office located in Athens exaclty a month before the competition starts.  

    There are four Russian grandmasters participating which means they have to face each other in the 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th rounds. 

  • The Norwegian Chess Federation has confirmed: Vladimir Kramnik won't play in the super tournament which will take place in Stavanger from May 7th to 18th. He will be replaced by Peter Svidler.
