Sochi: 12 GMs to Fight for $100000 Soon in Dvorkovich Drawing Room

The World Championship match is being accompanied by various side events. Six participants of the Petrosian Memorial are going to Sochi after the finish to take part in the 2-days blitz tournament in memory of Mikhail Tal (which we have already announced) on November 13-14. The prize fund of the double round-robin competition (4'+2" time control) is $100000, with $20000 for the winner. The list of invited players has finally been revealed; here it is, according to the blitz FIDE ratings:

The games will begin at 12:00 GMT the first day (November 13th, a free day in the World Championship match) and at 08:00 the second day (November 14th). The venue is Dvorkovich Drawing Room in the Sochi Media Center which is for the moment hosting the children's Russian Champions and Award Winners tournament.

  • The visit by Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev is expected today in the Sochi Media Center; he might make the first symbolic move in the 11th game of the match.   • The tournament in memory of Mikhail Tal will nevertheless take place in Russia this year, and quite soon: it will be held in Sochi, in the same Media Center as the current Carlsen - Anand match. The only difference from the previously cancelled Tal Memorial is that now it's a blitz tournament. No information is currently available about whether it's a one-time event or the one to become traditional.

  • The website publsihed the list of top-30 rapid players. Let us remind you that such ratings were officially introduced a year ago, however, FIDE still hasn't made a rapid rating list yet.

  • An opening ceremony of the Tigran Petrosian Memorial will commence today at 19:00 MSK (16:00 GMT) in the Novotel Moscow City hotel. The tournament is organized by the Russian Chess Federation and sponsored by Tashir group of companies; the chairman of the organizing committee is President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan who is President of Armenian chess federation as well.

  • The competition will be held without Carlsen, Aronian and Kramnik

  • As we've already reported Magnus Carlsen signed contract to play Vishy Anand in the World tile match. It is scheduled to start on November 7 in Sochi., Russia. According to FIDE all world champions are expected to visit the event, however, the internaional chess organization doesn't confirm whether the knock-out championship winners are also invited. Meanwhile, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov's assistant Berik Balgabayev invited Garry Kasparov personally replying him in Twitter.

    Yesterday was the rest day only for Carlsen and Anand: everyone else was waiting for Arkady Dvorkovich to arrive. While the chairman of the organizing committee (and Deputy Prime Minister of Russia) was on his flight to Sochi, twelve invited GMs were fighting for the prize money of $100000 in the Tal Memorial Blitz.
