The 28th Zurich Christmas Open has concluded in Switzerland in favour of the top seed player: Arkadij Naiditsch (2731) defeated the experienced GM Kiril Georgiev in the last round and took the clear first place with 6.5 points out of 7. The 2nd place went to Hungarian GM Laszlo Gonda (2542) who outplayed GM Christian Bauer (2647) in round 7, scoring 6 points. IM Torbiørn Ringdal Hansen, GM Georg Meier, and GM Richard Rapport tied for the 3rd place with 5.5 points each (see complete final standings).

This convincing victory has brought the German GM the prize of 3000 Swiss francs and a partial revenge for the recent Qatar Open where he had left 28 Elo points.

In round 4, an IM of Switzerland probably forgot the fact that Naiditsch should by no means be given attacking chances while in his best shape.

KURMANN - NAIDITSCH (round 4)

Black has got a dangerous initiative, yet White is two pawns up, and in case of the cold 18.Rf1 (intending 19.d3 or 19.d4) the position wouldn't have been totally clear. Instead, White played 18.Bf3? and Black's attack went by itself.
18...Rxf3 (this typical sacrifice doesn't even deserve an exclamation mark) 19.gxf3 Nf4 20.Qf1 Qg5+ 21.Kh1 Qh5 22.Re3 Nxh3 23.Nc3 e4 24.f4 Nxf4+ 25.Kg1.

25...Ne2+! (simple but nice) 26.Qxe2 Qh2+ 27.Kf1 Qh1# 0-1
