Garry Kasparov confidently outplays Nigel Short

in St Louis, the first day of the friendly match between Kasparov and Short has ended. Today they played one rapid game and four blitz. All the games developed with the advantage on the side of the former world champion, and if the score had ended any differently from what it did, it could only have been even more one-sided.

Kasparov suffers but also enjoys himself. Short just suffers.

In the rapid game, Kasparov failed to find the winning move in an overwhelming position. As he later said in an interview, his lack of practice told: "Whilst I sometimes play blitz on the internet, I last played rapid chess six years ago against Karpov. The most difficult thing was to sense the time, to get the necessary rhythm of play. I did not always manage this."

In the blitz, Kasparov outplayed his opponent with both colours. But in the second game, he "dozed off" and lost on time, in a position where he had some advantage.

In compensation, the "angry and the mighty", as Short called him, immediately won the best game of the match so far, with a direct attack on the enemy king. "Lacking practice, it is easier for me in positions with attacking chances and a clear plan, - said Kasparov. - I don't do so well in positional manoeuvering, I start thinking too long ..." Nigel agreed with this and admitted that he had tried to lure his opponent into precisely these most difficult positions for him, but he did not always succeed.

The most spectacular game from the viewpoint of this scenario was game four. Coming out of the opening, Kasparov voluntarily weakened his pawn structure, considering that the two bishops would give him more than sufficient compensation.

KASPAROV - SHORT (blitz game 4)

11.f4!? One appearance at the board by Kasparov is enough to create a textbook example for trainers and players.
11...exf4 12.Qf5+ Kb8 13.Qxf4 Qxf4 14.exf4, and the two bishops gradually had their say in the ending. Objectively, Black is holding, but his defence is not pleasant. In mutual time-trouble, it was Kasparov's opponent who committed the final mistake, just as Carlsen's opponents do nowadays in "real chess".

61...c2? There was a simple draw with 61...а1Q 62.h8Q (or 62.Rxa1) Qxh1, because the c-pawn draws against the queen.

"Of course, I was very nervous, - smiled Kasparov, - but at the same time, I enjoyed playing. I have not felt this for a long time".

Short admitted he was very unhappy with his play. The jet-lag did not help him - Short has just arrived from playing in Thailand, where he won an open tournament. "Tonight I shall sleep, and we will see tomorrow".

The second half of the match takes place on Sunday, 26 апреля at 22.00 Moscow time. The players will again play one rapid game and four blitz.
