The last game of the third round ended by Karjakin’s win over Boris Gelfand, which means it became the third in a row of the games won by Black.

Black managed to equalize the position from the very opening (Catalan opening took place); a novelty 16.Rd3 didn’t really bring Gelfand any benefits, so that the game went in a likely equal manner.

In a critical moment of the game Gelfand threw himself into the attack by 31.Nd5 (in Karjakin’s opinion, after exchanging queens on e6 and the move 32.Ne2! White held equality, his opponent refused to agree) 31...Kh8 32.Rc7?! (perhaps probable equality could still be hold by 32.e4!), but after 32...Rbd8! 33.e4 (33.Rgxg7? would get 33...Rg8!) 33...Bf8! advantage went to Black.

Despite several inaccuracies made in the endgame, Karjakin managed to convert his advantage and win a point.

For example, Black good win with a pretty blow 54...Bxh2+! with an idea of 55.Kxh2 (or 55.Rxh2 Qg4+!) 55...Qh5+ 56.Kg1 Rxf1+ 57.Kxf1 Qd1 mate. 54...Qd7 would also lead to a quick victory.

“The most important is that I’ve won!” concluded Russian Grandmaster.
