The Queen is Not The Champion

Ding Liren has won the Chinese Championship again; Hou Yifan was disappointing

The Chinese Championship collected almost all of the country’s strongest players. And the key news is that 19 year-old Ding Liren has won the title for the third time after his successes in 2009 and 2011.

His fame is lagging behind his results. As is typical for the Chinese players, he’s an aggressive player and a distinct tactician despite his attraction to the closed openings with White. His main repertoire for Black is an explosive mixture which can probably be named after the German veteran Wolfgang Uhlmann. It’s the French Defence in reply to 1.e4 and the King’s Indian in reply to the other main moves.

The future winner was able to put down favourable foundations for the tournament straight from the first round, by taking an upper hand against the rating favourite Wang Yue in the very interesting battle. He gained the lead after consecutive wins between the 3rd and the 5th rounds. He had some luck in the 7th round when he won the endgame against Zhou Jianchao without any compensation for a pawn. He returned Caissa’s favour the next day when he wasn’t able to realise an exchange and a pawn. It’s worth mentioning that one of his curious encounters was the draw in the French in the 9th round, against the future silver medallist Yu Yangyi.

Ding Liren's first "gold" was in the Chinese Championship of 2009. Shen Yang is next to him.

Let’s have a look at one of the most notable games of the three-time champion.

DING LIREN (2660) – LU SHANGLEI (2514)
The Queen’s Gambit
The Chinese Championship 2012, 5th round
(Annotated by Mikhail Golubev)
1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.d4 d5 4.Nc3 dxc4 5.e4 Bb4 6.Bxc4!? Nxe4 7.0-0
It’s hard to say when this gambit variation occurred for the first time (the Mega Database shows Arbakov – Kishnev, The Moscow Championship 1989). This variation became popular only recently: it appears that a number of dangers await Black.

7...Nxc3 8.bxc3 Be7
8...Bd6 is less frequently used. Here’s a recent example: 9.Ng5 h6 10.Ne4 (White showed an interesting idea in the game Sulskis – Lupulescu, Porto Carras 2011: 10.Qh5 0-0 11.Re1!? hxg5 12.Bxg5 Be7 13.Bd3 f5 14.Bxe7 Qxe7 15.Bxf5 Rxf5 16.Qxf5 exf5 17.Rxe7, and Black later lost this sharp endgame) 10...0-0 11.Qf3!? (after 11.Qh5 Nd7! 12.Bxh6 gxh6 13.Qxh6 Re8 Black holds – Mamedyarov – Morozevich, The Blitz World Championship 2009) 11...Nc6 12.Nxd6 (there are important alternatives – for example, 12.Rb1!?) 12...cxd6 13.Qg3 Qf6 14.Qxd6 Rd8 15.Qg3 e5! Black had equalised by returning the pawn in Sargissian – Khairullin, the European Championship 2012. The game in China happened only a day later.
9.Ne5

Last year Topalov used a novelty 9.Re1 against Pelletier
9...0-0 10.Qg4

10...c5
This move is probably an opening mistake. Attack on the centre is not without logic but Black’s delay in development is becoming too serious. The most common move here is 10...Nc6!? – it was played by Kramnik, Jakovenko, Grischuk, Morozevich and others. Let’s believe it to be the strongest move.
11.Bh6 Bf6 12.Bd3! N
This is an improvement on Kanep – Kaunas, Riga 2011 where 12.Rad1 was played.

12...Re8
Now Black will lag in development even more while the f7 pawn will become vulnerable. However, it was difficult to predict the consequences (players need to use their intuition in this case). Besides, it’s hard to advise an alternative. For example, after 12...Nd7 White is able to realise the main threat winning an exchange: 13.Qe4 g6 14.Bxf8.
13.f4!!

Less clear is 13.Qe4 g6 (but not 13...Bxe5? 14.Qxh7+ Kf8 15.dxe5 gxh6 16.f4! with a lot of pressure). Analysis shows that there is no satisfactory defence for Black after the move in the game.

13...g6
Other possibilities are:

A) 13...cxd4 is refuted by 14.Bxh7+! (14.Bg5 is also not bad) 14...Kxh7 (or 14...Kf8 15.Qh5, and so on) 15.Bxg7! Bxg7 16.Qh5+ with the win: 16...Kg8 17.Qxf7+ Kh8 18.Rf3 Qh4 19.Qxe8+.
B) 13...Nd7 14.Rf3 Nf8, and White starts the destruction again: 15.Bxh7+! Kxh7 (or 15...Nxh7 16.Rg3! Bxe5 17.Bxg7) 16.Bxg7 Ng6 (if 16...Bxg7 then 17.Qh5+! is winning) 17.Nxf7! Qe7 18.Bxf6 Qxf6 19.Rh3+ Kg7 20.Ne5 Qf5 21.Rg3, getting the piece back and ending up with lots of extra pawns.
C) 13...Nc6 14.Rf3! g6 (in case of 14...cxd4 the winning continuation is 15.Rg3!) 15.Bxg6 fxg6 16.Nxg6 e5 17.f5, and Black cannot defend against all the threats (taking on e5, 18.Rg3 and others)

14.Bxg6!
Less clear is 14.Nxg6 fxg6 15.Bxg6 Re7!.
14...fxg6

There’s no difference in case of 14...hxg6 15.Nxg6.
15.Nxg6

15...hxg6
It’s not any easier if Black doesn’t take the knight. For example, 15...Qc7 16.Ne5+ Bg7 17.Qh5! (it's simpler than 17.Rf3) 17...Rf8 (if 17...Re7 then 18.Bxg7! with the idea of 18...Rxg7 19.Qe8#) 18.Bxg7 Qxg7 19.Rf3 Rf5 20.Qh4, winning the queen for a rook.
16.Qxg6+ Kh8
Black could have conceivably hoped for a draw in this position when analysing it some moves earlier, but he is left disappointed.

17.Bg5!

17...Bxg5
After 17...Rf8 18.Rf3 Bxg5 19.Rh3+ Bh4 an interesting way to the decisive advantage is 20.Qh6+ Kg8 21.Rxh4 Kf7 22.Qh5+! Ke7 23.Qxc5+ Ke8 (or 23...Kf7 24.Rh7+ Kg8 25.Qh5 Qf6 26.Rh6 Qg7 27.Rg6) 24.Rh7!. But it’s easier to check with the queen from h5 on the 20th move in order to stop the king from going to f7, and then after 21.Rxh4 Black has to give up his queen or resign.
18.fxg5! Re7 19.Qh6+! Kg8 20.g6

The smoke has cleared. Black’s undeveloped pieces can’t defend the kingside properly. (20.Rf6 is also decisive).
20...Nd7 21.Rf3 Nf8

There is a bit more resistance in 21...Qf8 22.Rxf8+ Nxf8, but White’s advantage here is overwhelming. They can play 23.Qg5! with the idea of 23...Rg7 24.Qd8!.
22.Raf1 Nxg6

And Black accepted the unavoidable defeat.
23.Rg3 Rg7 24.Rxg6 1-0

Recently, there’s been a special attention to the performances of the World Champion Hou Yifan. She played in the “Men’s” Championship rather than in the Women’s Championship which was held in parallel (Huang Qian overtook Zhang Xiaowen according to the tie-break rules, while Ju Wenjun finished a point behind them). The Queen won one game against her male opponents, the victim was Zhao Jun. She lost two games, in the 1st and the 3rd rounds, to the international masters who both ended up at the bottom of the table. She missed an unusual tactic in one of those encounters.

LIU QUINGNAN (2461) - HOU YIFAN (2639)

18...Qg6 19.Nxb5!And it transpires that it’s bad to play 19...axb5? due to the following invasion 20.Rxa8+ Bxa8 21.Qa1! with the main idea of 21...Bc6 22.Qa6 Kd7 23.Qa7+ Kc8 24.Rf7. Hou Yifan chose 19...d5and had chances of a favourable result later on, but lost anyway.

The young champion missed a win (practically in one move) in the 4th round against Zhou Jianchao. Her play stabilised later in the tournament. Hou Yifan’s result can be called somewhat unsuccessful. The race for rating against Judit Polgar has slowed down. Perhaps, the extra attention she receives in the homeland is not always good for her.

But small setbacks are unlikely to reduce the World Champion’s optimism and belief in her own strength.

Have a look at all the games of Ding Liren and Hou Yifan from the Championship (their encounter happened in the 2nd round and was a draw; the prodigy could have had difficult problems to solve if the c3 pawn was taken on the 34th move).
