The Capablanca Memorial: Ivanchuk Cemented His Lead by Winning Against Dominguez Once More. The Russians Had the Perpetual Again

In the seventh round of the traditional Jose Raul Capablanca Memorial in Havana, Vassily Ivanchuk cemented his lead. For the second time in this tournament, he won against one of his main rivals Leinier Dominguez, who was half a point behind the Ukrainian after six rounds.

Ivanchuk played the Scandinavian Defence with black in this important encounter. The start of the game didn't look like it would cause worries to White. However, the Cuban (the Blitz World Champion, same as Ivanchuk) clearly underestimated potential dangers of his weakened position.

Already here White had to show precision, but the Cuban grandmaster didn't demonstrate that and chose stereotypical 22.Rad1?! (it was better to put the rook on the "c" file). The balance of power slowly but surely leaned towards Ivanchuk's side, who avoided a possible repetition with his move 26 and indicated a desire to win. It all ended with a complete destruction for White.

Similarly to their game in the first stage of the round-robin, the Russian grandmasters delighted spectators with complications that quickly ended in the perpetual check.

The Marshall Gambit (the Semi-Slav)

A game from eight years ago Grigoriants - Potkin ended as a draw in a different way: 16.Ne4 Bg4 17.Nd6+ Ke6 18.Nc8 Kf7 19.Nd6+ Ke6 20.Nc8 Kf7.
16...Bg4 17.Bg6+! hxg6 18.Rd7+ Ke6!
After 18...Bxd7 19.Qxd7+ Black would have lost his queen.
19.Rd6+ Kf7 20.Rd7+ Ke6 21.Rd6+ 1/2-1/2

The fight between Yuniesky Quesada and Victor Laznicka, in a double-edged Sicilian middlegame, ended with the first win for the Cuban in this tournament.

Ivanchuk is leading with 5 out of 7. The nearest rival, Nepomniachtchi, is one point behind. In the eighth round Ivanchuk will be white against Quesada and Nepomniachtchi will be black against Laznicka.
