  • Mexico hosted the festival UNAM, in the main tournament of which the following GMs competed: Magnus Carlsen (Norway), Lazaro Bruzon (Cuba), local GM Manuel Leon Hoyos and the winner of the previous tournament that was held two years ago Judit Polgar. Let us remind you that the Hungarian player defeated Veselin Topalov in the final of UNAM 2010. 

    Now spectators were offered the final between Carlsen and Polgar.

  • Vassily Ivanchuk is again leaving Cuba as a winner

  • The rapid match between Francisco Vallejo and Veselin Topalov has ended in Leon. Same as the day before, the opponents exchanged blows in the fifth and sixth games. Playing with black, Topalov voluntarily sacrificed the queen for a rook and a bishop on the move 20, which soon led to a hopeless position. The Bulgarian got one back with white in a complex struggle and the overall match score became 3.5-2.5 in the Spaniard's favour.

  • The first decisive game in the Capablanca Memorial in Cuba occurred after an ending in the second round: Vassily Ivanchuk won without much difficulty against Zoltan Almasi.

  • The winner of the friendly match Ivanchuk - Giri was already known yesterday: Anish told us the real regulations differed from the ones published on the official website. The players got points as follows +2 =1 -1, however, the winner of the match was decided by the results in each format not by the sum of the points for each game.

  • GM Motylev celebrates win in Yerevan

  • Before the main tournament of the festival, which is scheduled to start tomorrow, an exhibition blitz comeptition was held in Biel, Switzerland. Eight participants competed in a knock-out system. Magnus Carlsen was beat in the very first circle by Bacrot (0-1, 1-0, 0-1); Hikaru Nakamura defeated Harikrishna (1/2, 1-0), Alexandra Kosteniuk - Wang Hao (1-0, 1/2) alexander Morozevich - Yannick Pelletier (0-1, 1-0, 1-0).

  • The traditional festival is underway in Hoogeveen, the Netherlands. The main competition gathered four GMs: Michael Adams, Wesley So, Loek van Wely and Robin van Kampen. 

    In Round 1 more experienced van Wely and Adams lost against So and van Kampen respectively. The second round games finished peacefully.  

  • The traditional 22nd tournament has finished in Malmo. Five GMs and one IM competed in a round-robin: Fressinet 2709, Hammer 2647, Timman 2626, Grandelius 2600, Blomqvist 2497, Smith 2473. 2+ was enough for Fressinet to finish first. Second is IM Axel SMith who was the only player to gain 14 ELO points at this competition. 

  • In Pardubice, Czech Republic, the main event was the open tournament A, which had 289 players including 35 GMs. 

    The first two places were occupied by the salient rating favourites - Viktor Laznicka and Sergey Movsesian.
