The situation that ocсurred regarding Evgeny Surov from the very beginning of the Olympiad and which continues even now is completely abnormal. In my opinion the journalists should be accredited for such an event, despite the organizers personal liking.

  • Ilya Levitov’s (The Head of the Management Board of RCF) open letter to the Olympiad organizer Mr. Yazici has no impact on Chess-News editor-in-chief accreditation.

    Evgeny Surov’s comment:

  • Text is from the official site of the Olympiad.

We have received both appreciation and expressed concern regarding an individual who is not accredited as journalist or as a guest to the Olympiad venue.

  • About a week ago Chess-News site chief editor Evgeny Surov received an unpolite letter from Olympiad organizers who told him that he will not be invited to the Olympiad neither as a journalist nor as a guest. He tried to change the situation by applying to chess officials of different levels but in vain. However last night after the opening ceremony FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov told Evgeny Surov in a private talk that the will try to settle the things over during the day of the first round.

  • Dear FIDE President Mr. Ilyumzhinov!

Are you satisfied with the FIDE Vice-President and the Chairman of the Olympiad Organizing Committee reply for your demand to give me an acceditation?

  • Peter Doggers (the editor-in-chief of the Chessvibes.com) commented on Chess-News issue. He remarked that the majority of Mr. Surov’s colleagues preferred to keep silence about what has happened. One of the accredited for the coverage of the Olympiad journalist confirmed Mr. Doggers that he is simply afraid to be disqualified too.

  • Dear Mr. Yazici,

The Russian Chess Federation is sincerely grateful to you for the organization of the world chess festival – Olympiad in Istanbul.

Taking into account the long-term friendly relationship between our countries and federations, we earnestly ask you to provide the Russian journalist Evgeny Surov with an opportunity to freely cover the World Chess Olympiad.

  • Vasily Papin met FIDE President

  • Several dozens of Istanbul chess Olympiad participants asked Kirsan Ilyumzhinov to settle the situation related to the chief editor of the Chess-News site Evgeny Surov. Every day the organizers actions are becoming more and more unusual and silly. First he was not given any acreditation, then he was not let in through the security control and now he is asked not to stay outside in front of the playing hall entry.

  • Dear Arkady Vladimirovich and Dear Ilya Vladislavovich!

I would like to tell you about my outrageous experience as a Russian journalist at this time of the Olympiad in Istanbul. As one of the FIDE’s leaders, Mr. Ali Nihat Yazici, with sufferance of Mr. Makropoulos and Mr. Ilyumzhinov, are violating not only their slogan «We are one family» but also my rights as a journalist and human.

  • I would say that current events in Istanbul should be printed on the first page. I’m talking about a well-known journalist Eugene Surov. He was forbidden to act as a journalist on Chess Olympiad. The only explanation was “we’re not allowed to let Mr. Surov in”.

All that has happened causes only bewilderment. Can we believe that such organization as FIDE still lives according to the law of the jungle (as in 90s)?
